Couples Therapy

Romantic relationships can be challenging, especially when the partners are involved in conflict. Couples counseling, often used interchangeably with the term "marriage counseling,” is a form of therapy that targets the challenges experienced in romantic relationships, whether the participants are married or not. It is not uncommon for couples to enter counseling while in the dating phase of their relationship, which can be a true gift to their relationship. The primary purpose of couples counseling is to provide clinical perspective and techniques to help the couple reestablish their loving bond.

In couples counseling, the couple is considered the primary client. This simply means that the focus of the therapy is to identify what is best for the partnership. The therapist’s role is to encourage both partners to participate equally in the sessions–sharing their feelings, thoughts, struggles, and perspectives. As the therapist gains an understanding of the relationship’s dynamics, they will provide feedback to the couple about dysfunctional patterns in their communication, behaviors, or responses towards one another. The therapist may ask the couple to complete “homework,” or treatment assignments, outside of therapy to practice the skills learned in session. After working with a couples therapist, many participants experience improved relationship dynamics, better communication, and a deeper connection to their partner.
